Advanced Customization

This section of the documentation has been depreciated. It is included for legacy systems only.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning with version 11.10.00, the Client Customization Tool has been moved onto the Partner's Portal. No further updates will be made to the stand-alone customization and branding tool that was included with pre-11.10 versions. The stand-alone tool has been discontinued and will no longer be supported.

To customize and brand your client installers, log into the Partner's Portal at

What is this used for?

This section describes Advanced Customization and Branding features in RBackup. Branding and customization features are standard.

Editing the Client's Help File

The Client's help file is in Microsoft Compiled HTML (CHM) Help format and can be edited with any editor that can edit .CHM files. The file, called rbackup.chm, can be found in the Client's installation directory, \RBS Server\Client\ . CHM Editors can be found by searching the download sites for ".CHM Editor" and range in price from free to $499. As of this writing, the GridinSoft CHM Editor ($68) is recommended.

Client Printed Documentation

The Client's documentation for printing is in .DOC file format on your RBS Server in the folder \RBS Server\Documentation\

After you have edited the help file, place it into the Client installers - the CD based installer at \RBS Server\Client\ and in your Online Installer, if you own the Online Installer PlugIn. Do not change the name of the file, and make sure the file name remains in all lower-case letters.

Running External Programs Before and After Backup Sessions

RBackup can run one set of commands and programs before each backup session, and another after each session. Each backup set can have its own set of commands and programs that it runs.

This feature can do many things, like disk maintenance, copying files, add additional encryption or compression, preprocess files, shut down applications that might have files locked, and shut down the computer.

Here's an example of how to use this function to perform a local backup to a removable hard drive during each remote backup session, thereby keeping a redundant on-site copy of data.

Running the Client Installation in Silent Mode

Some people have a need to install the RBS Client software silently, without displaying all the normal InstallShield dialogs. This is sometimes needed if installing the RBS Client software as a part of other installations, when the installation is launched by another program. You can have your RBS Client software install silently - without displaying any dialogs at all from the installer.

In the \Client\ folder there is a file called setup.exe. That's InstallShield's setup engine. On a computer that does not have an RBS client installed, drop to the command prompt and run the following command: Setup -r

This will run a normal RBS Client installation, and will record all your keystrokes as you answer the prompts. After the installation you will find a file called Setup.iss in your Windows (or WINNT) folder. This file contains all your answers to the prompts, as well as some other information.

Change the name of the Setup.iss file to all lower-case. So, if the file is named "Setup.iss" change it to "setup.iss" Then copy the setup.iss file into your Client installers - the disk-based installation file set at \RBS Server\Client\ and also into your OnlineInstaller folder(s) which will be copied to your web server.

When you run the RBS Client installer from other programs, instead of running "setup.exe" run "setup.exe -s" This will run the setup in silent mode, using all your previous responses as the defaults.
